The GI Free Loan Society
Interest-Free. Member To Member. Forever.
The Most Replicated Wealth Tool In Immigrant History
Every successful immigrant community in America has built one. The Hebrew Free Loan Society (founded 1892, still operating today, $120 million in cumulative interest-free loans issued with a 99% repayment rate). The Korean Kye. The Ethiopian Equub. The Igbo Esusu. The Chinese Hui. Different names, same idea: community members pool capital and lend it back to each other, interest-free, when life requires it.
The Kalenjin diaspora is one of the only major immigrant communities in America that has never formalized this. When a Kalenjin needs $500 quickly, the choices today are brutal: a payday lender charging 350% APR, a credit card at 28%, or an extended-family ask that strains the relationship. None of those should be the answer.
That changes now.
"No Kalenjin should ever borrow $500 at 350% interest again."
The Society's Promise
How It Works
The mechanic is intentionally simple:
- Every active GI member contributes $25 minimum per year into the Fund (above and beyond regular dues). Members who can give more, do.
- The Society launches with $25,000 in seed capital from Year-One fundraising operations (Kenyan Night, corporate sponsorship).
- Any member in good standing may apply to borrow. Applications are confidential.
- A 5-person Loan Committee — chaired by the Treasurer, appointed by the President with Board approval, including at least one woman and one non-officer member — reviews applications, vets repayment capacity, and approves disbursement.
- Loans carry zero interest, zero origination fees, zero hidden charges. The only cost is the moral obligation to repay so the next member can borrow.
- Repayment is structured as a small automatic deduction or recurring payment. Repaid capital recycles immediately back into the Fund.
The Five Loan Categories
Where The Capital Comes From
The Fund is capitalized from three sources:
- Member contributions — $25 minimum per year per active member. With 1,400 members at full participation, this generates $35,000 annually.
- Seed funding from operations — A one-time $25,000 contribution from Year-One Kenyan Night net revenue plus corporate sponsorship dedicated to the Fund.
- Repaid principal — Every dollar repaid recycles. The Fund grows even when no new contributions arrive.
The Math — How Compounding Builds Real Capital
Year 3: $130K capital. Approximately $80K in active loans. Over 100 cumulative borrowers.
Year 5: $250K capital. Over 200 cumulative borrowers. The Society can now extend $10K loans.
Year 10: $600K+ capital. The Society underwrites down-payment loans up to $25,000. Real home ownership becomes accessible to working families who previously had no path.
The math is conservative. It assumes only $25/year per member, 60% participation, modest fundraising additions, and zero net default. The Hebrew Free Loan Society has run for 130+ years with a 99% repayment rate — community capital with community accountability simply does not default at meaningful scale.
Why The Society Belongs At The Center
The payday lenders. The check cashers. The 28% credit cards. The 90-day balloon-payment "loans." Every dollar of interest paid to outside lenders is a dollar that leaves our community. The Society keeps that dollar circulating between us, for us, forever.
A Truckers' Guild member can borrow $1,500 to cover his lease-purchase down payment. A Healthcare Guild nurse can borrow $1,500 for her LPN-to-RN bridge program tuition. A Family Services single mother can borrow $500 to fix her car so she can keep her shift. The Free Loan Society is the financial engine that makes every other initiative actually accessible.
The Hebrew Free Loan Society started in 1892 with seven men pooling small contributions. Today it has issued $120 million. Our Society will run for as long as Gotabgaa exists. The members borrowing in 2026 will fund the borrowers in 2046, who will fund the borrowers in 2076. This is generational wealth at the community level.
Year-One Targets
25 first-year loans extended across the five categories — averaging ~$2,000 per loan.
Loan Committee operational with published criteria, application process, and quarterly Board reporting.
Default-rate baseline established at under 5% (well below the 1% target the model can sustain long-term).
The first 25 success stories published anonymously back to the membership — to seed trust and grow contributions in Year 2.
"The Hebrew Free Loan Society has loaned $120 million in 130 years with a 99% repayment rate. We are 1,400 strong. There is no reason we cannot build the same."
